UNITS History

In 1998, Michael T. McAlhany, Jr. founded Extra Room Self Storage, LLC, located along the coast of South Carolina. As a result of this venture, he realized there was a need for a new and innovative way to move and or store individuals’ belongings. Once a self storage facility would reach 100% capacity there was a need for more land in order to expand his business so he decided to try something new.

The founder took advantage of a new venture that would enable customers to move or store their property in a much more efficient and less stressful manner; not to mention the ability to stack containers would eliminate the need to expand a warehouse outward. In 2004, Mr. McAlhany created UNITS Mobile Storage, Inc., and with it the most durable and spacious mobile storage containers in the industry.

In addition to the capacity issue, it also came to Michael's attention that the majority of his clients were retirees who were less able to load and unload their belongings up and down the ramps of moving trucks and then in an out storage spaces without serious strain. UNITS containers are delivered and placed at ground level for the convenience of loading, packing, and unloading with no difficult ramps or steps so that our clients can enjoy an effortless moving experience.

UNITS distinguishes itself from other mobile storage companies by providing and maintaining local customer service representatives to adhere to the needs of its customers. Our desire for local customer service has established UNITS as a company that truly cares about its customers and this focus has led to multiple customer referrals. Customers know they can depend on UNITS to provide them with the best possible moving or storage experience, and as a result they repeatedly return to utilize our services.

In just 4 years UNITS has expanded to twenty five locations throughout the country. With 125 new franchises planned to open over the next five years, UNITS believes that it will exceed the competition on multiple levels to become the number one company in the mobile storage industry. Our vision for the future of UNITS is focused on continuous growth, unsurpassed container equipment and extraordinary local customer service. This desire to achieve the goals set forth by UNITS will expose our products and services to the entire nation, and one day UNITS will be a global service provider.
